Challenge:
To develop the first "big box" retail center in
San Francisco and convince retailers that the South of Market
(SOMA) area is a viable retail location, despite the absence
of any existing retail projects.
Vision:
To build a pioneering multi-story promotional retail project
South of Market, taking advantage of affordable real estate,
excellent freeway visibility and access, and proximity to
the surrounding residential population.
Results:
The completed project was the first big box development in
San Francisco and legitimized SOMA as a retail location. Showplace
Center is anchored by the first Toys 'R' Us and Bed, Bath
& Beyond stores in San Francisco and lead to the construction
of a nearby Costco.
