Historic Rehab
 |
Challenge:
To acquire and rehabilitate an 80-year old, 11-story, 400,000
square foot former headquarters for Southern Pacific Railroad
while preserving its historic architecture. The building was
vacant and had been damaged by an earthquake.
Vision:
To modernize and seismically retrofit this landmark building,
while protecting the historic features and keeping the grand
façade intact.
Results:
The renovation was completed within 24 months of acquisition
and included the repair of the exterior, seismic upgrade,
installation of state-of-the-art mechanical, electrical, life
safety, elevator and telecommunications systems. Overlooking
the newly-refurbished Embarcadero, the Ferry Building and
the San Francisco Bay, the building is now the Bay Area headquarters
for Microsoft, Del Monte, The Haas Foundation and Epicentric,
as well as other companies. The project has won several awards.
